FLORENCE, AL – For the sixth year, the University of North Alabama will have the French Film Festival. Set to begin March 6 with the 2021 release of Aline and conclude March 22 with 2020’s Josep, the festival includes six screenings. Admission is free for UNA faculty, staff, students, and members of the community.

“I am delighted to see this event bring together the UNA family and the local community to enjoy films in French,” said Dr. Stephanie Coker, Associate Professor of French and among the festival organizers. “Selections this year include classic films, a drama, a comedy, a documentary, and an animated movie – we hope to have something for everyone.”

A French-themed reception is scheduled for March 6 at 5 p.m. At the close of the festival, the UNA Culinary Arts Department will prepare a special dessert for moviegoers to take home. This event is hosted by Dr. Coker and the UNA Department of Foreign Languages, with the UNA School of the Arts, the Department of Cinematic Arts and Theatre, the Department of English, the Mitchell-West Center for Social Inclusion, the Office of International Affairs, and the Cole Honors College.

“We appreciate the support from many different departments and offices across campus,” Dr. Coker said. “One highlight of this festival is hearing from UNA faculty in various disciplines who lead the discussion with students and community members after each film.”

The festival is the result of a grant from the Albertine Cinémathèque program of the FACE Foundation and Villa Albertine partnership with the French Embassy in the United States. UNA is just one of 50 colleges and universities across the country to receive the grant, and UNA is the only institution in Alabama to be chosen.

All films will begin at 6 p.m. in the auditorium of Wesleyan Hall on UNA’s campus, and admission is free. The schedule is:

  • Monday, March 6: Aline (2021)
  • Wednesday, March 8: Klein (1976)
  • Monday, March 13: France (2021)
  • Wednesday, March 15: 400 Blows (1959)
  • Monday, March 20: Gallant Indies (2021)
  • Wednesday, March 22: Josep (2020)
